The custom of hanging stockings over the fireplace at Christmas is deeply rooted in the culture of many countries. It is associated with the expectation of gifts. But where did this tradition come from? And how did it become an integral part of the Christmas holidays?
The Legend of Saint Nicholas
The origins of this phenomenon go back to the ancient legend of St. Nicholas, who lived in the 4th century in Asia Minor. According to legend, Saint Nicholas, known for his kindness and desire to help the poor, learned about a family that found itself in a difficult situation.
Saint Nicholas decided to help quietly. At night, he threw a bag of gold coins through the window of the house. The coins accidentally fell into socks hung to dry by the fireplace. Since then, it has been believed that Saint Nicholas brings gifts by leaving them in his socks.
Modern interpretation
Today, gift Christmas socks have become a symbol of joy and celebration. They are made from bright materials and decorated with embroidery and other decor. In Cyprus, socks of different sizes and colors can be bought in any store specializing in New Year's decorations.
A tradition that grew out of a simple story about helping others continues to inspire people around the world. Nowadays, this is not only a way to please loved ones with gifts, but also a reminder of the importance of good deeds that make the world brighter, especially during Christmas.
