Plenary: Voted to refer the President to the Constitution Act

The Plenary of the Parliament unanimously accepted the reference of the President of the Republic to the law amending the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus, for the establishment of the right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

It also voted with 46 votes in favor and 5 against the relevant text of the law, as amended by the Legal Committee of the Parliament.

The ELAM MPs and the independent Member of Parliament, Andreas Themistokleous, were opposed.

By amending the Constitution, the constitutional protection of the environment is strengthened, while providing, at the same time, substantial guarantees for the effective implementation of the relevant right.
